SALA Artist - Erin Kate
South Australian Living Artists Festival 1-31 August 2024
Artist Profile
Erin found her life turned upside down last year when her ME/CFS suddenly shifted from mild to fluctuating between moderate and severe. No longer able to continue in the same job role, and with her world now significantly smaller than before, art became an important form of staying connected both to herself, and to the aspects of the world that bring her joy.

Artist Comments
“Captured Under Glass” is a self portrait of sorts, using materials grown in my garden alongside found objects and butterfly specimens as the basis for expressing the dark and light parts of myself (as well as the gold throughout- Au for autism). It also expresses the hope that I can continue to grow within the limitations of being “captured” by ME/CFS.
“Home” is simply an expression of how I feel in my home and garden; warm, cosy, and peaceful. This piece is also captured under glass… though the captured-ness isn’t so much the focus of this piece, it’s more about seeking solace and sanctuary in the stillness and familiarity of home.
Description of the artwork
“Captured Under Glass”
A beautiful tall glass dome bell jar with a gold pedestal encloses two white and black butterflies alighting on dried pink and purple flowers and gilded leaves. There is a bit of green moss on the bottom of the jar. There is a reflection of trees in the jar's glass lid.
“Home”
Two butterflies (one black and white and one brown, blue and white) are laid flat on a mauve book binding which has been used as a backdrop. The words "The Brown" and "book" are visible in a agilded cursive on the book spine. There is also a gilded oval frame under some dried pink and white flowers. There are several other types of white and yellow flowers and green leaves and stems. The whole thing has a shadowbox effect with each element projecting a shadow onto the book.
