Artist Comments
Mindful Art was created in 2023, one small square at a time, using watercolour paint and ink on watercolour paper. These were trimmed and arranged on coloured cardboard. I find this type of art very relaxing.
River Red is a photo taken on my mobile phone several years ago. Walking in the park after a wild storm, I saw this huge fallen River Red gum tree with the inside exposed. It had been raining and the late afternoon light was just right, both enhancing the colour of this beautiful tree.
Rainbow Quilt was made this year, just in time to give to my 6-year-old grandson when we visited Vienna last month. It was made from cotton fabric scraps of different sizes. I have now made six quilts for grandchildren, with two more to go in a few years' time.
Moeraki Boulders was a photograph taken about six years ago on a visit to the South Island of New Zealand/Aotearoa.
Spotlight, a photograph also taken on my mobile phone, was an experiment in light and dark with my grandchildren.
Cards made from the photographs are available for sale at $5 each plus postage.
Description of the artwork
Mindful Art is an artwork in the shape of a grid with three mini-works across the top, and four down. The grid lines are black and each panel is made up of different abstract patterns in shades of pink, grey with black ink lines on a white background. Some of the panels look geological (like rocks) and some look almost floral. There is a sense of movement and vibration in each panel as the gaze travels along the grid.
River Red is an extreme close-up photo of a broken and mangled gum tree. Strings of orange and yellow wood from the interior of the tree almost glow set against the dark chunks from the broken outside of the tree.
Rainbow Quilt is a huge fabric blanket made up of six blocks by nine blocks. The blocks are made up of various patterns of fabric with similar colours in each block. The colour blocks are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, wine/maroon, violet, blue. In the photo, the quilt is being held aloft in front of some green shrubbery with a concrete foothpath and blue sky in the background.
Moeraki Boulders are two dome-shaped rocks with cracks that have been shaped because they sit on the sand in the wave zone of a beach. In the photo there are four gentle, but frothy waves rolling in, washing around and wetting the boulders.
Spotlight is a shining light pink hibiscus flower placed on the grass in bright sunlight, with heavy shadows in the background.
