In a recent study published in the journal Psychiatry Research Case Reports, researchers present the case of a 27-year-old African American woman with a history of schizoaffective disorder suffering from fibromyalgia, a neurological condition characterized by chronic pain. The woman reported self-medicating with potent, dispensary-procured cannabis in gradually increasing dosages to suppress her pain, but with the side effects of cognitive dysfunction, profound fatigue, sleep disorders, and drastic mood swings alongside suicidal tendencies.

The Nationwide Problem Of Chronic Pain

I’ll admit I used to inwardly roll my eyes and try to change the subject when people would start to talk about pain. But all that changed when I personally became aware of just how debilitating chronic pain can be. I developed a new understanding and compassion for those who live with pain on a regular basis. The outer world disappears when you are wrapped in a blanket of pain, and until that pain recedes, you’re caught in a world of isolation, unable to move away from your ice pack, your medication or both. The worst part about it is the unpredictability of when that pain will strike next, making it nearly impossible to plan or carry out even the simplest of daily activities.

Addiction Medication Offers New Hope For Long COVID Patients

Researchers identified a potential treatment for long COVID by restoring the function of ion channels in immune cells using low-dose Naltrexone. This discovery, detailed in Frontiers in Immunology, mirrors earlier findings with chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) patients, suggesting a common pathophysiological thread between the two conditions. The breakthrough could alleviate symptoms such as brain fog and muscle fatigue. Clinical trials for both long COVID and ME/CFS are set to begin, testing the efficacy of this repurposed drug.

New Therapeutic Promise For Fibromyalgia

A novel approach using a non-invasive, painless laser called Fibrolux offers new hope for fibromyalgia, a notoriously challenging condition that affects about 4 million US adults, about 2% of the adult population, and is the only Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared device for the condition. The laser treatment was shown to reduce pain by more than half and the number of pain points by 20% or more in 87% of patients in a clinical study.
