Brain Signal Disruption In Fibromyalgia Patients

Fibromyalgia is a chronic syndrome defined by widespread muscle pain, fatigue, sleep dysfunction and cognitive dysfunction. Fibromyalgia pain dysfunction involves an increased sensitivity to pain known as hyperalgesia. New research suggests that a disruption of brain signals for reward and punishment contributes to this increased pain sensitivity. The results published in Arthritis & Rheumatism, a journal of the American College of Rheumatology, suggests that it is this altered brain processing that could contribute to the widespread pain felt by people with fibromyalgia as well as the lack of response to opioid therapy in patients.

Juvenile fibromyalgia (JFM) is a prevalent chronic pain condition affecting children and adolescents worldwide during a critical period of brain development. To date, no published studies have addressed the pathophysiology of JFM. Here we characterize gray matter volume (GMV) alterations in JFM patients for the first time and investigate their functional and clinical relevance.

A procedure developed in the 1930s that shoots anaesthetics into big nerve bodies found on each side of the neck? Does that sound sketchy or what? It’s reported, though, to be quite safe and it aims to do two potentially important things in long COVID, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and related diseases: calm down the sympathetic nervous system and restore blood flows. It’s called stellate ganglion block (SGB) and it was just tried in long COVID.
